I’ve been happy with Dreamhost… but by the complaints that you can find on the interweb about them, you’d think that they were the worst ever.
I guess people who are shelling out $7 a month demand (and in their eyes deserve) the same level of service and attention as someone forking over $500 a month for a dedicated server.
I think dreamhost should be ok, depending on what you’re using them for. We hosted Forever Delayed on Dreamhost for a while (they said they could handle it) but the site was far too big, and their service was too unstable.
You get what you pay for though I guess.

I have been using DreamHost for my clients sites, and they have been very fast with resolving any issues I have had. I also like the fact I have full control of my account.
The biggest thing I have noticed so far is the speed!
If they’re working for you then that’s cool, Adrian. I think there was a clash with the package that we had signed up for, and the size of our site (mainly the forum). It’s no one’s fault really – they just weren’t right for our needs. It’s a lesson learnt.
